My Quilt

A few years ago my Mom and Grandmaw decided to make my sis, my brother, and me a homemade quilt. My mom wanted to do this before my Grandmaw no longer could. She has dementia and it has slowly been progressing over the last 10 years. We call my Grandmaw "Mawmaw," if your Cajun you know how to say Mawmaw properly and you know what I mean by that. :)

My Mawmaw used to love quilting. She was in a quilting group at church or as my sister calls it, "A Stitch and B*tch." Mawmaw's quilting group made quilts for the troops, all the new babies born at the church, and the graduating seniors. Once someone broke into the church and stole some of the quilts. We later found out the thief sold them for drug money. I think it's kinda funny.

My mom let Jenn, Jarrett, and me each pick our colors, fabric, and the design of the quilt. My brother just said, "Blue" and left the rest up to my mom. LOL. My mom put the fabric pieces together, she's the more artistic one. Then Mawmaw and my mom quilted each masterpiece together. They gave me my quilt for my birthday in 2007. I LOVE it. These photos don't do the quilt justice.

I've been paranoid to bring the quilt to Houston. My apartment building is old, built in the 1930's. I have serious problems controlling the dust. Trust me I will be using it someday, just not in this apartment. Monday I had my mom take it out so I could see it again. I was starting to forget how it looked. Ooooo.... I love.

On the back my mom monogrammed one of my favorite Bible verses, Jeremiah 29:11.

I love it that they "signed" it and dated it. My great grand children will know who made it and when, no guessing.

I love the scalloped edges.

I requested a Shabby Chic Quilt. My mom said it reminds her of a strawberry milkshake.

That is just beautiful, and so special. I have a quilt my grandmother (Gaga) made me, and I, too, have it tucked away for safe keeping until I have the appropriate space to display it!

Wow, what a beautiful quilt! I started buying quilts about three years ago. I was buying them out in Fredericksburg but they can't hold a candle next to yours. Your mom and MawMaw put a lot of love into that quilt....

I laughed when I read Grandmaw because I didn't have to scroll any further to know it was your MawMaw from Louisiana. I remember you told me that your Grandparents were Cajun. Do you call your Grandpa PawPaw?

That is so gorgeous, even with out all the sentiment that went into it. I have a beloved family member with dementia and we waited too long to document some important family history and recipes...so I can fully understand what a treasure you have and why your over protective of it. Gorgeous!

That is a beautiful quilt. I've made several quilts, but only one that I hand quilted. It is now about 25 years old and one of my girls is using it to sleep with right now. I did a quilt square exchange on my last adoption (with AHH for both adoptions)this summer I'm going to work with my girls to make quilts.

Definitely strawberry milkshake!!!!

Somehow, I knew before I saw the pictures it would be pink;-). What a sentimental treasure you have to wrap yourself in their love and hand down to generations to come.

Beautiful!!!

that is so, so beautiful! my mother has quilted for as long as I can remember and has made me, along with my siblings, several quilts over the years. she's made each of us one when we graduated from high school, and in each corner, she put a heart and then the others would write messages to that person

I recently took a quilting class where I learned to make potholders! I'm starting with that, but will move to quilts and more eventually :)

I love it! My grandmother made two quilts for me before she passed away.

I also sleep with a 70 year old quilt on my bed, made by my great, great grandmother.

OMG, that is so beautiful. I love quilts. Your mom and mawmaw did a great job and it is so masterfully beautiful. They have such a great talent. My mom and and two grandmothers use to quilt back in the day. I don't know how to quilt, but people who do can tell a story through their hands without writing on paper. They just write on material and with it they bring long lasting deep memories that keep you going through your life.

BTW, I love that scripture to. Your mawmaw and mom making that quilt, was definitely part of that plan. Beautiful. Have a great day.

that is a STUNNING quilt!!! It's so gorgeous, what a lovely family heirloom. smart idea on not bringing it to your apartment. I think the only way you could is if you had a cedar chest, because then it would be protected. Thanks for sharing this!

What a special treasure. I love quilts! I love that they get softer as they get older. Nothing better to cover up with than a quilt.

Yours is one of the prettiest I have ever seen. And to think it is made by hand with such love...

We thoroughly enjoyed making the quilt.
